Colin Penn Promotions
The Superheroes Swop Sensation was released in 1982 by Colin Penn Promotions in Durban, South Africa. Colin was the pianist and leader of Colin Penn and the Pennants, a musical trio that began in 1954. Colin and his wife Barbara first brought superheroes to South Africa with multiple promotions.
The Superheroes Swop Sensation is a series of sticker-cards featuring 70 different superheroes and villains from the DC and Marvel universes. Paper envelope packs were originally priced at 18 cents in South African Rand. Packs contain five base "Swopcards" and one "Clue Card." A limited-edition card featuring The Joker and "Wild Card" redemptions were randomly inserted into packs. The back of each base card contains the height and weight of each character, as well as a brief description in English. Card variations have been observed with either imperial or metric units.
The Superheroes Swop Sensation was promoted on Video 2, a program hosted by Delia Sainsbury on South Africa's TV1 network. A limited insert of The Joker could be redeemed for a ride to school in the Batmobile. "Wild Card" inserts, serial numbered to 1000, could also be exchanged for a Batmobile ride or "some of 400 great prizes." The promotion was available to children living within a 25 kilometer radius of Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, or Cape Town. Swopcards could also be used as discount vouchers for giant posters, coloring books, figurines, t-shirts, playing cards, and pencil tops.
The Superheroes Swop Sensation Official Souvenir Album was sold separately for 60 cents in South African Rand.
